FALL 2023 – SPRING 2024

Tricks of the Trade

With the support of the Seattle Study Club, the Dallas Study Club provides a theme for every year. This tradition is intended to establish a motif and framework between every lecture in a semester year. By providing an annual theme, we aim to focus club members on a specific facet of their continued education. Our theme lays out a clear and concise focus for our lectures, allowing our members to anticipate discussions and link unfamiliar information to their specialties.

Real world dentistry and relying on convention is part of everyday practice. What is seldom taught, however, is what to do at the chair when things go awry and ideal techniques don’t work! Through experience, our presenters and maestros have found ways to facilitate treatment with favorite techniques and/or special instruments, making life so much easier in treatment problem-solving. Likewise, new information that makes a procedure easier and leads to more predictable treatment outcomes is also an essential part of the mix. With Tricks of the Trade, clever ideas will be introduced in both clinical and non-clinical offerings.

SmileBangladesh Benefit Dinner

SmileBangladesh is a New Jersey-based nonprofit medical organization dedicated to caring for children and adults afflicted with facial cleft deformities in Bangladesh and around the world. It is estimated that there are up to 300,000 children and adults in Bangladesh with unrepaired cleft deformities. Conversely, it is estimated that there are less than 30 surgeons in the country with formal training in cleft surgery. This translates to about 10,000 cleft patients per surgeon.

The greatest hurdle in caring for cleft patients in Bangladesh is access to care. Most Bengalis with cleft deformities are from the more rural areas of the nation. Many don’t even know that clefts can be repaired; those who do are often unable to access or afford care.

A Treatment Planning Workshop for Hygienists: Coaching Periodontal Patients in Oral Rehabilitation

Lauralee Nygaard, DDS, MS, PSLecture screening for hygienists.

Dental hygienists play an important role on dental teams in building relationships with patients. Those relationships establish trust and provide opportunity to educate, encourage and motivate the behavior change necessary to achieve oral systemic health and smile rehabilitation. To best educate and inform, it is important for hygienists to have knowledge of medical history, periodontal treatment, periodontal recall, restorative options for occlusal rehabilitation, and informed consent for tooth replacement.

Dr. Nygaard will introduce a challenging case for participating hygienists to consider possible treatment options. They will be able to think about ways to restore periodontal health, enhance chewing function and the patient’s smile, and develop an ideal plan to increase longevity. Dr. Nygaard will share the completed treatment and the impact of this case as an example of the life-changing dentistry dental teams create every day!

Connect: Leveraging Digital Technologies So You Can Focus on Patient Care

Wael GarineParag Kachalia

Lecture screening for staff.

Do you fear checking the office voicemail Monday morning or looking at your email inbox knowing patients are cancelling or rescheduling appointments? Do you have difficulty getting patients to complete their forms prior to the appointment? Do you hate having to remember which patients may need treatment when you are trying to fill the schedule? These, along with many others, are practice issues we confront daily. While there is no magic wand to make these issues disappear, you may be able to leverage technology to ease our workflows and get back to focusing on caring for patients.

This program will focus on how technology can be leveraged today to create more office efficiencies. Drs. Garine and Kachalia will discuss a host of technologies, ranging from bill pay via text message to artificial intelligence that can search every radiograph taken in the last 18 months and provide a report identifying patients that may benefit from scaling and root planing.

Collaborative Debate: Save or Extract

Wael GarineSilvia La RosaTodd SchoenbaumHooman Zarrinkelk

Lecture screening for doctors.

hroughout your lifetime, some of the most difficult choices you will ever have to make are in deciding whether to let go or to hold on a little longer. As clinicians, we are not immune. Save or extract is undoubtedly a daily dilemma, and while we strive to make clear-cut choices, it is hard not to second guess ourselves in the decision-making process. A thorough understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment option will aid in making better decisions.

Side 1: Over the last two decades, dentistry has seen an increase in tooth removal and replacement with implant-supported prosthesis. This trend is largely attributable to better predictability of dental implants and the patients’ demand for quick results and immediate gratification.

Side 2: The decision to remove otherwise reasonable teeth is technical as well as philosophical. As clinicians, we are ultimately facilitators of patients’ desires, tasked with treating their current dental condition to help them achieve their desired outcome. Most patients simply want an esthetically pleasing smile as quickly as possible.

Simplifying Dental Insurance Management

Travis CampbellLecture screening for administrative staff.

Managing dental insurance claims can be frustrating and time consuming. The main challenges creating these frustrations are unnecessary and come from common myths surrounding insurance. These myths and misunderstandings are what drive offices to spend too much time fighting claims that can be easily approved with changes in documentation. This course will focus on understanding how to simplify the process, improve collections, and ultimately have happier patients who enjoy the more favorable reimbursements you can achieve for them.

Better, Faster, Stronger Direct Composites with the Injection Molding Technique

David ClarkLecture and workshop for doctors.

Ceramic restorations have long been considered the optimal choice for predictable aesthetics and longevity. “Bonding” has been considered a short-term solution that can be both technically challenging and aesthetically unpredictable.

The injection molding technique with ultra-thin Bioclear anatomic tooth forms has created a “Third Modality” with monolithic restorations that can endure and sparkle for decades.

In this course, Dr. David Clark will present restorative possibilities with the Bioclear Method. A complete update of the science of bulk filling and crack tooth avoidance will be presented. Four hands-on exercises will be included. First, attendees will restore a deep class III without a wedge, using anatomic Bioclear matrices to create a perfect gingival seal and emergence profile. Second, they will measure, pick correct Black Triangle matrices, then injection mold a Black Triangle case. Third, they will set up and then restore an Infinity Edge Class II restoration. Fourth, they will perform matrix placement and deep margin techniques for deep, wide decay in a class II.

Managing Expectations vs. Managing People

Irene IancuLecture screening for hygienists.

Unfortunately, staff expectations are rarely addressed proactively in practice. This increases the risk of workplace conflicts and can threaten organizational performance. Why do dentists frequently neglect managing expectations and insist on managing people? This overly assertive behavior can (and will) increase staff turnover and decrease office productivity. During this presentation, you’ll learn how to structure expectations, professionally convey them, differentiate positive feedback from affirmative statements, and establish processes to manage expectations vs. managing people.

Cleaning Up Your Own Mess: A Tale of Redemption!

Vinay BhideLecture screening for doctors.

In this rescue mission workshop, Dr. Vinay Bhide is faced with the task of reconstructing the anterior maxilla after implants have failed due to peri-implantitis. Sounds straightforward, doesn’t it? It is, until it isn’t! Surgical reconstruction of a deficient ridge in preparation for dental implant therapy has been shown to be a successful and predictable modality of treatment. Now, superimpose a history of peri-implantitis and failed implants onto this scenario and things aren’t so linear anymore.

This workshop will showcase a 47-year-old patient who had implants placed in the anterior maxilla and restored with a fixed bridge and subsequently developed peri-implantitis after more than five years in function. The implants were lost to the disease process, leaving Dr. Bhide the formidable task of reconstructing the deficient, residual ridge for implant therapy…again! While the reconstructive surgery went well, the post-operative healing events that ensued did not. Faced with an already compromised site which was now healing poorly: How could the initial peri-implantitis and bone loss have been prevented in the first place? What would Dr. Bhide have to do to change the course of treatment so this case could be restored successfully? Attendees of this workshop will get an insight into surgical complications and how to deal with them effectively so the ultimate goals of esthetics and function can be achieved!
